When Does Dpafu Occur?

Lasting or severe cases of DPAFU are often reported in people who suffer from other psychological or emotional conditions; these can include agoraphobia, depression, OCD, social anxiety and excessive worrying.  The sensations of DPAFU are especially common in people who have panic attacks.

  • DPAFU sensations can also occur during and immediately following a traumatic experience such as a road traffic accident or natural disaster.
  • DPAFU can be a symptom of neurological conditions such as temporal lobe epilepsy and migraine.
  • Other situations triggering feelings of depersonalisation may include bereavement, use of hallucinogenic drugs, and even tiredness, jet lag and stress.
  • There is also a group of patients who appear to experience the symptoms with no other detectable psychiatric cause
