How Can I Help Myself?
A critical step in overcoming worry is to begin to be more aware of how far worry may be impacting on our lives. One of the most important steps towards overcoming worry is getting a better understanding of what worry is and how it sticks around as a problem.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been found to be a highly effective treatment for GAD with roughly two-thirds of worriers getting much better and the other third also getting some form of relief. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) - an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health in the UK - recommends CBT and/or self-help books based on CBT are used to treat it.
